What size rug do I need?

The right rug size depends on the room and what it sits under. In a living room, the rug should be big enough that at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs rest on it, with a little bare floor as a border. In a bedroom, it should extend about two feet past each side of the bed. Under a dining table, it must be large enough that chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out. This calculator applies those interior-design rules and gives you the nearest standard rug size to buy.

Rugs come in standard sizes (5×8, 8×10, 9×12 ft and so on). We recommend the closest standard size that follows the design rule — if you’re between two, size up for a more grounded, spacious look.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size rug for a living room?

Pick the largest rug that leaves roughly 12–18 inches of bare floor around the edges, so the front legs of all your seating sit on it. For most living rooms that’s an 8×10 or 9×12. Enter your room size above for the exact recommendation.

What size rug goes under a queen or king bed?

An 8×10 works under a queen and a 9×12 under a king, leaving about two feet of rug showing on each side and at the foot. Choose your bed size above and the calculator picks it for you.

What size rug for a dining table?

The rug should extend about 24 inches beyond every edge of the table so chairs don’t catch the edge when pulled out. This calculator adds that margin and rounds up to the nearest standard size.

Should I size up or down if I’m between sizes?

Size up. A slightly larger rug makes a room feel bigger and more finished; a too-small rug makes furniture look like it’s floating.
